2022 BMW XM: powertrain, technical details

The XM is the first M model with a plug-in hybrid powertrain, combining a 489hp, 4.4-litre twin turbo V8 engine with an electric motor. This allows for a total power output of 653hp and 800Nm. BMW has paired this engine to an 8-speed automatic gearbox, which sends power to all four wheels via the M xDrive system. Meanwhile, a more powerful version of the XM, the Label Red, will arrive in September 2023 for international markets. This model will put out 748hp and 1,000Nm.

Along with sporting the capability of accelerating from 0-100kph in a brisk 4.3 seconds, the XM can also be run in pure EV mode with a range of up to 80km. The luxury performance SUV also comes equipped with an adaptive M suspension, electronically controlled dampers and a new 48V system, which helps with rear-wheel steering and reduced body roll via active anti-roll bars.

2022 BMW XM: exterior, interior, and features

Sized similar to the X7, the XM sports a radical design as some of its exterior styling highlights include the massive illuminated kidney grille with gold accents, a split headlamp set-up, and vertically stacked exhaust outlets at the rear. The XM gets 21-inch wheels as standard but customers can also opt for the 22 or 23-inch wheels.

On the inside, the XM sports the familiar BMW layout, previously seen on the iX and i4. The rear seating area has been devised as an ‘M Lounge’, placing more of an overt focus on occupant comfort than any M car before it. In terms of features, the XM gets the 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a 14.9-inch touchscreen running the latest iDrive 8 software, ADAS tech, ambient lighting, four-zone automatic climate control, and the Harman Kardon surround sound system.

2022 BMW XM: rivals

The BMW XM goes up against other performance SUVs in India such as the Lamborghini Urus Performante, Aston Martin DBX 707, and the Porsche Cayenne Turbo GT. Its other chief competitors include the Ferrari Purosangue and the Bentley Bentayga Speed. Along with the XM, BMW has also launched the updated M340i and the S1000RR superbike.
