The Apache RTR 160 2V has been around for 15 years, and continues to be sold alongside the superior TVS Apache RTR 160 4V.

There are motorcycles, and then there are motorcycles that garner sales numbers so huge, it is difficult for the company to pull the plug on them. Case in point, the TVS Apache RTR 160 2V. The TVS Apache RTR 160 with the two-valve head has no doubt been growing long in the tooth. Especially since the brand, in 2018, launched the brilliant Apache RTR 160 4V that offers better performance and features.

So, why isn’t TVS bidding adieu to the two-valve model? The answer is simple: sales volumes.

The Apache 160 2V remains a strong seller despite its age.

Launched in 2005, the Apache series has found 4.8 million buyers to date. This includes bikes from the early Apache 150 right up to the current lineup of Apaches on sale, including the Apache RTR 160. The TVS Apache RTR 160 2V is one of the bestsellers in markets such as Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, along with parts of western India. So much so that the two-valve model constitutes 30 percent of TVS Motor Company’s 160cc motorcycle sales.

This explains why TVS hasn’t retired the RTR 160 2V and, in fact, continues to update the model from time to time. This year’s update got the Apache RTR 160 2V a new LED headlight and tail-light, and Bluetooth connectivity. More importantly, the RTR 160 2V’s engine now produces 16.04hp at 8,750rpm, which is up from 15.53hp at 8,400rpm. Peak torque, though, has reduced very slightly – from 13.9Nm at 7,000rpm to 13.85Nm at 7,000rpm. TVS has also managed to reduce the weight of the bike by 2kg.
