Toyota Rangga sub-Hilux concept details, future rugged SUV

Rangga concept sits on IMV ladder frame platform; could spawn a rugged off-roader in future.

Toyota recently took the wraps off its Rangga compact pickup concept at the Indonesian Motor show, which previews a future pickup that will be positioned below the popular Hilux. The Rangga is, in fact, an updated iteration of the IMV 0 concept shown at Thailand last year. The name Rangga takes inspiration from the Japanese word “Ronggo”, which translates to a hero who is strong and tough

  2. Aimed at ASEAN and emerging markets
  3. Could get petrol, diesel and EV powertrain options

Toyota Rangga concept: what is it exactly?

The concept sits on a ladder-frame setup, which is a derivative of the IMV platform that also underpins other Toyota models like the Innova Crysta and Hilux. While Toyota has not shared any details about the concept’s dimensions, it looks much smaller than the Hilux. Despite introducing the modular TNGA-F ladder frame architecture, Toyota will continue using the IMV platform for rugged models, at least in emerging markets due to cost restrictions.

The pickup concept shares quite a bit with the IMV 0 concept – apart from the platform – including its boxy yet cute looks that resemble the Urban Cruiser EV concept shown earlier. Toyota displayed the concept in multiple body styles and said that it will serve as a blank canvas for buyers who want to customise their vehicle according to their needs.

Toyota has not revealed any powertrain details yet, but going by the platform in use, it will be safe to expect an RWD setup with petrol and diesel engine options, and an EV powertrain too. The IMV platform is capable of supporting 4WD as well, which opens up the possibility of bringing in a rugged off-roader on the lines of the Compact Cruiser, which has also been previewed earlier in EV form.
