Tesla suspends operations at Shanghai plant on Covid outbreak

Tesla is to suspend operations for four days at its Shanghai plant due to a new Covid-19 related lockdown in the city.

The authorities in Shanghai are imposing new population curbs and carrying out mass testing after a surge in Covid-19 infections.

Reports say that businesses in Shanghai are closing in two phases. China’s authorities have pursued a so-called ‘zero Covid’ strategy allied to spot lockdowns in local areas, with the intention of irradicating infections. However, a spike in cases has brought a city-wide lockdown to Shanghai.

The Shanghai lockdown will be implemented in two phases to carry out mass testing over nine days. Tesla’s plant is in the area that will be locked down in first phase – from Monday through to early Friday.

Last week, BMW suspended output at its Shenyang manufacturing facilities in northern China due to a Covid-19 outbreak there.
