Britain’s Road Haulage Association (RHA) has launched its vision for the coach sector.

The policy which has been developed with RHA Coaches members, focuses on pushing change in six key areas: COVID-19 recovery, the environment, accessibility, recruitment, image of the industry and road infrastructure.

“Coaches play a vital role in the transport sector, but many operators feel they’re taken for granted and dismissed by government,” said RHA chief executive, Richard Burnett.

“They came to us because they needed a voice so we’ve worked together to articulate their concerns and set out a vision to support them through COVID-19 recovery and beyond.

“Our coaches policy gives us a solid foundation to press government for positive change to help our sector thrive.”

RHA key points on the six policy areas:

COVID-19 recovery:

Government should promote coaches as safe travel and offer financial support, which supports long-term viability of the industry

The environment: Government must support coach industry through transition to alternative fuels.

Accessibility: PSVAR (Public Service Vehicle Accessibility Regulations) must focus on journeys rather than vehicles

Recruitment: Introduce lower age limits to encourage more young drivers into the industry

Industry image: Promote the industry as a key economic driver

Roads: Better roadside facilities for drivers and improved coordination of roadworks
