Nissan Patrol price, India launch details, Land Cruiser 300 rival

New Patrol SUV will also spawn a more luxurious SUV for Infiniti brand.

Nissan has begun testing the next-gen Patrol, its popular flagship SUV that takes on the likes of the Land Cruiser 300. There have been many sightings of the all-new SUV – which is internally codenamed Patrol Y63 – in the Middle East and North America. It is expected to see a global debut in the coming months.

  • Next-gen Patrol to ditch V8 for a twin-turbo V6 petrol
  • Will be more luxurious, feature-laden than before
  • Will be sold as Nissan Armada in North America

Nissan Patrol Y63: new design, added features

Spy shots confirm that the upcoming Patrol Y63 will sport an all-new body shell and will not have anything in common with its predecessor. It will, however, continue with its rugged off-road character replete with a boxy look, an upright nose and a flat tailgate.

The overall look of the Patrol SUV is more squarish with fewer rounded edges when compared with the outgoing model. The finer design cues will be sleeker with sharper-looking headlamps along with C-shaped LED DRLs and a large grille. At the back, the tail-lamps are angular and vertically positioned on each side of the flat-ish tailgate.

The SUV’s basic design was previewed earlier this year by the Infiniti QX Monograph concept, which also confirmed that the next-gen Patrol will spawn the more luxurious QX80 SUV, primarily aimed at the North American market.

The standard Patrol is also expected to have many more creature comforts and added tech, including ADAS functions and more safety features.

The Patrol will continue to serve as Nissan’s flagship model in countries where its Infiniti counterpart won’t be sold. Meanwhile, in the North American market, it will be branded as Nissan Armada.

Nissan Patrol Y63: twin-turbo V6 to replace V8

Just like the Land Cruiser 300, Nissan will ditch the V8 petrol engine for a more powerful but smaller displacement twin-turbo V6 setup in the interest of fuel economy and emissions. While engine details are not out yet, we expect the SUV to come with a 9-speed automatic transmission. There are talks that unlike the Land Cruiser 300, the next-gen Patrol SUV won’t get a diesel engine option.

Nissan Patrol Y63: global debut, India launch details

Nissan has evaluated the outgoing Patrol Y62 for the Indian markets, but the model was not officially launched here. The brand currently has a single model on offer in India – the Magnite – and has plans to introduce more models like X-Trail in the near future. There is no news on whether the new Patrol Y63 will make it to India.
