As an urban electric runabout, the Comet EV will be techy and feature-laden.
Earlier last month, MG Motor gave us the first glimpse of the exterior design of the upcoming Comet EV, and now, the carmaker has revealed the first interior image of electric urban runabout. As we have already reported, the Comet EV is based on the Wuling Air EV that’s sold in Indonesia and the interior, unsurprisingly, is quite similar to the latter.
- Comet EV steering controls inspired by Apple iPod
- Will get dual 10.25-inch infotainment screens
- Expected to be priced from around Rs 10 lakh
MG Comet EV interior revealed
As seen in the image, the Comet EV will come with a two-spoke, steering wheel with two control sets on each side. The round, multi-function buttons on the wheel are inspired by Apple’s iPod and will likely control audio, navigation, as well as voice commands for the infotainment, among other functions. The simple, two-spoke design does compliment the Comet EV’s minimalist interior theme rather well.
What’s also visible behind the steering wheel is a dual infotainment screen setup that houses two 10.25-inch screens. It’s a floating unit that sits neatly on the dashboard. Two horizontally positioned AC vents are placed right below the screen, below which are neat-looking rotary air-conditioning controls with chrome highlights.
And while MG hasn’t revealed a detailed equipment list yet, the Comet EV will be positioned as premium intra-city runabout, for which MG will certainly not be skimming on features. It’s expected to come equipped with connected car features, electric parking brake, hill start assist, keyless entry and go, drive modes, Android Auto, Apple CarPlay and voice commands, among others.
The interior is also expected to get a dual-tone treatment. Being a born electric vehicle, it will also have the packaging advantages of such a platform, allowing for lots of space on the inside. However, due to its small footprint, it will strictly be a four-seater model.
MG Comet EV: powertrain and range
The Comet EV is expected to be powered by a battery of around 20kWh capacity. The battery will be locally sourced from Tata AutoComp, and our sources tell us it will give the Comet EV a driving range of up to 250km that will likely be certified by iCAT, just like MG’s other electric car is, the ZS EV. The Comet is expected to be powered by a single, rear-axle mounted motor with a power output of around 45hp-50hp.
MG Comet EV: rivals, launch timeline
MG will take the complete wraps of the Comet EV in the coming days, and price announcement is expected sometime in May. Upon launch, it will find competition from the likes of the Tata Tiago EV (Rs 8.69 lakh-11.99 lakh) and the recently launched Citroen eC3 (Rs 11.50 lakh-12.43 lakh) in the electric hatchback segment. The MG Comet EV will be assembled in India and MG plans to give it over 60 percent localisation to make it as competitive as possible. We expect the Comet EV to be priced between Rs 10-12 lakh, ex-showroom.
