Mercedes EQS SUV goes on sale priced from £129,179

Mercedes-Benz has launched its flagship electric SUV, the EQS, which is available to order now priced from £129,710.

The new model is based on the German car maker’s bespoke electric vehicle (EV) platform and therefore shares powertrains and technology with the EQS saloon.

Two versions will be offered from launch: the EQS 450 4MATIC, which features up to 365 miles of range, or the EQS 580 4MATIC, with up to 364 miles. Both use a twin-motor arrangement, giving all-wheel drive, and the same 108kWh battery pack.

The 450 develops 360PS and can accelerate from 0-62mph in six seconds, while the 580 takes just 4.6 seconds thanks to its 544PS output.

Airmatic air suspension and four-wheel steering comes as standard on all models to improve agility and ride comfort, it also enhances the car’s off road capability.

Two trim levels are offered with a high level of standard equipment. AMG Line Premium Plus includes nappa leather upholstery, heated and cooled front seats, a heated steering wheel, panoramic roof, 360-degree camera and Burmester sound system.

For an extra £7,995, buyers can equip the EQS SUV with the Hyper Screen pack, which turns the dashboard into one giant touchscreen. The standard setup utilises a 12.8-inch central display and a separate digital instrument cluster.

Mercedes has launched a new range-topping Business Class trim level for the EQS SUV, which includes the Hyper Screen as well as massaging seats and rear media screens for passengers.

The EQS SUV will sit at the top of the brand’s electric line-up. It will be joined by the smaller EQE SUV next year.

Mercedes-Benz has confirmed it will refocus its model line-up in high-profit luxury segments, dropping cheaper models.

The brand plans to become a ‘dedicated pure-play luxury car company’ and will target three segments: top-end luxury, core luxury and entry luxury.
