Mercedes-AMG G 63 4X4 Squared gets hardcore off-road gear

The G 63 AMG 4X4 Squared will continue to be one of the most capable off-roaders ever built.

Mercedes-Benz has brought back the high-riding G-Class 4×4 Squared for a second generation. While the previous iteration was offered in a more standard G 500 guise (badged G 550 in North America), the new version will be offered in the hotter AMG G 63 guise. Like its predecessor, the new G 63 4X4 Squared gets massive ground clearance and portal axles at all four corners, along with other off-road related upgrades.

  • New G-Class 4X4 Squared to produce 585hp
  • Less capable off-road than the outgoing model
  • Gets 22-inch alloy wheels with massive tyres

Mercedes-AMG G 63 4X4 Squared: one of the most capable off-roaders

The new portal-axle equipped AMG G 63 4X4 will be less off-road capable compared to the previous-gen model. It has been designed to be more comfortable and usable on road, and also to be closer to the regular G 63.

The G63 4X4 Squared has a 45-degree approach angle and a ground clearance of 350.5mm; whereas the previous-gen G-Class 4X4 Squared had an approach angle of 51.8 degrees and a 410mm ground clearance. Mercedes says the water fording depth for the new SUV is around 909mm – almost 100mm less than the outgoing model’s 1,000mm.

While these off-road figures may put the second-gen model a little behind its predecessor, the new SUV will still be one of the most capable off-roaders around.

Up next, the suspension. The new G 63 4X4 Squared gets the standard SUV’s independent front suspension set-up as opposed to the solid front axle layout as on the previous-gen G-Class 4X4 Squared. The 22-inch alloy wheels add to the new SUV’s monster-truck looks. Additionally, it gets wider fenders with carbon fibre wheel arch extensions.

Mercedes-AMG G 63 4X4 Squared: powertrain and features

Under the hood, the G 63 4X4 Squared comes with the familiar AMG 4.0-litre twin turbo V8 engine that is good for 585hp. This is 163hp more than the outgoing G 500 4X4 Squared. The new SUV features full-time four-wheel drive and is expected to have lockable differentials, among other off-road features.

Meanwhile, the carbon fibre-framed LED light bar on the roof, along with the carbon fibre-finished spare tyre carrier, will add to its luxurious yet rugged look. Another new feature on this SUV is the digital rear view mirror to adjust for the big spare wheel and the raised ride height.

The SUV will be well-loaded with many luxury options – including Nappa leather and ambient lighting – as the standard G 63. Mercedes-AMG will also offer wood finish on the floor of the cargo area on this SUV.

Along with the previous G-Class 4X4 Squared, the G Wagen also had the G 63 6×6 and the Maybach G 650 Landaulet as its raised versions. Key rival to the all-new AMG G 63 4X4 Squared will be the upcoming Land Rover Defender SVX. Expect more details to be revealed soon.
