Maruti Suzuki Jimny 5 door launch, engine details and expected pricing

Maruti has switched to the newer K15C Dualjet engine for all of its models in India except the Ciaz.

There have been multiple sightings of the 5-door Maruti Suzuki Jimny being tested, and now we have got our hands on fresh details on its powertrain and off-road gear.

Jimny 5-door: K15B engine to continue

The 3-door Jimny is currently sold with the 1.5-litre K15B petrol engine that displaces 1,462cc and is good for 102hp and 130Nm of torque. This engine is paired with either a five-speed manual or a four-speed automatic transmission, with both gearbox options mated to Suzuki’s All Grip Pro AWD system.

Sources tell us that Maruti will continue to utilise the K15B powerplant in the 5-door Jimny as well. While power and torque outputs are expected to remain the same, the engine will most likely be mated with mild-hybrid tech, which will enable the SUV to get better fuel efficiency numbers and comparatively lower emission figures.

The engine has seen duty in multiple Maruti Suzuki models in India over the last few years. However, more recently, Maruti has replaced it with the more advanced 1.5-litre K15C with Dualjet tech in almost all of its models sold in India, barring the Ciaz sedan. But many made-in-India models sold abroad like the Ertiga facelift and the Jimny 3-door continue to soldier on with the older K15B unit.

The move to retain the older K15B series engine in the 5-door Jimny is likely cost-related and because a large chunk of the production of this new SUV would be earmarked for exports to markets where stricter emissions regulations are not yet in place.

While the manual gearbox option would be the same five-speed transmission, the automatic option will be the new six-speed unit which has been introduced recently in newer Maruti Suzuki models. As far as off-road gear goes, the Jimny five-door will come with Suzuki’s All Grip Pro four-wheel-drive tech, which also sees duty in the Jimny three-door.

Suzuki AllGrip Pro 4WD: how it works

In the AllGrip Pro 4WD, the distinguishing feature is the presence of a low-ratio gear that further multiplies engine torque and limits speed. Of the three AllGrip systems available, this is the one best suited to off-road driving.

The driver can select between two-wheel-drive high (2H), used for all normal driving conditions; four-wheel-drive high (4H), for some off-road or slippery conditions; and four-wheel-drive low (4L) mode, which is required for very tough off-road conditions like deep mud and sand or very steep slopes.
