The Maruti Suzuki Ciaz has driven past the 3,00,000-unit sales mark in the Indian market. Launched in October 2014, the Ciaz has achieved this sales milestone in 84 months. While the first 1,50,000 sales came up in 30 months, the next 1,50,000 have taken 54 months, indicating flagging demand for the mid-size sedan.

  • Launched with both petrol and diesel engines in 2014
  • Available as a petrol-only model with mild-hybrid tech
  • Rivals the Honda City, Hyundai Verna and Volkswagen Vento

Maruti Suzuki Ciaz: sales over the years

At launch, The Ciaz was offered with both a petrol and diesel engine in 2014. In fact, when it crossed the 1,00,000-unit sales mark in July 2016, diesel variants of Ciaz dominated with 55 percent sales. The Ciaz then crossed 1,50,000-units in 30 months in March 2017. However, the next 1,50,000 units have taken 54 months, indicating dwindling demand for the sedan.

This can be attributed to the Ciaz’s shift to a petrol-only model in the BS6 era, when diesel variants had dominated sales in the first three fiscal. Moreover, consumer preference also greatly shifted towards mid-size SUVs in the latter years.

As per our sister publication Autocar Professional’s analytics, a total of 2,99,190 Ciaz sedans have been sold in India since the model’s launch through to end-July 2021. This comprises a fuel-wise split of 1,73,114 petrol and 1,26,076 diesel units. The remaining 810 units that have helped the sedan to cross the 3,00,000 mark would have come in August 2021.
