Thar 4×2 diesel waiting periods reduced by 5-6 months; waiting times for the 4×4 variants have reduced by 2-3 months.
The Mahindra Thar has been a more than decent seller for the Indian SUV specialist, with monthly despatches averaging over 5,700 units. As we had reported earlier, Mahindra still has a backlog of about 71,000 units of the Thar (including the RWD version) yet to be delivered, but has worked on reducing the open order book. A ramp up in production, coupled with a ramp up in deliveries, helped in that regard; the former has also seen waiting times for the Thar reduce considerably.
- Mahindra Thar 4×2 diesel has the longest waiting period
- Thar 4×4 variants have a 2-3 month waiting period
- Thar currently priced between Rs 11.25 lakh-17.20 lakh
Mahindra Thar 4×2 waiting periods in February 2024
The Thar 4×2, also known colloquially as the Thar RWD, in diesel form currently commands a waiting period stretching up to 10-11 months. Meanwhile, one would have to wait for 5-6 months for a petrol Thar 4×2 booked today; both these timelines are dependent on the variant selected. These timelines represent a significant reduction over the 15-16-month waiting periods reported in October 2023.
The diesel Thar 4×2 is powered by a 1.5-litre engine that produces 118hp and 300Nm of torque, and is paired with a 6-speed manual gearbox. The petrol version gets the 2.0-litre turbocharged unit carried over from the Thar 4×4, and produces 152hp and 300Nm of torque; this engine only comes with a 6-speed torque converter automatic gearbox. Prices for the Thar 4×2 range start at Rs 11.25 lakh and go up to Rs 13.99 lakh.

Those looking to buy a Thar 4×4, will have to wait just 2-3 months for delivery; this is applicable for the petrol and diesel models, and the convertible and hardtop variants. The drop in wait times from 5-6 months to 2-3 months, shows Mahindra’s efforts to ramp up production are paying off.
The Thar 4×4 is available with two engine options – the above mentioned 152hp, 2.0-litre turbo-petrol mStallion engine, and a 132hp, 2.2-litre diesel unit. Unlike the 2WD variants, the 4x4s have optional 6-speed manual and automatic gearboxes. The Thar 4×4 also gets a manual-shift 4×4 transfer case, with select variants having a manual-locking differential.
Mahindra Thar 4×4 petrol prices currently range between Rs 14.30 lakh-16.60 lakh, while diesel versions are priced between Rs 15.00 lakh-17.20 lakh.
