Kia Sportage for Europe gets unique design, dimensions

The Kia Sportage SUV has been on sale globally for around three decades. However, for the first time, the Korean brand has revealed a European-version of the Sportage that is different from the one sold elsewhere.

  • Shares its interior bits with the EV 6 electric car
  • Will come with multiple engine options

Kia Sportage for Europe: what’s different?

The Sportage is among Kia’s most successful models sold globally and the new version switches to the Hyundai Motor Group’s N3 platform, which is similar to the latest-gen Hyundai Tucson and the Staria MPV among others.

That architecture has allowed the firm to develop two distinct versions: a long-wheelbase model launched in June, intended for the South Korean and US markets; and this short-wheelbase variant, developed specifically for Europe. This version will be offered with a choice of mild-hybrid, ‘traditional’ hybrid and plug-in hybrid powertrains. There will not be an electric version, as the Sportage is similar in size to the forthcoming EV6, a bespoke electric crossover.

The Kia Sportage for Europe is 4,515mm long, a significant 85mm shorter than the global model, despite being 30mm longer than the previous generation. The 2,680mm wheelbase is 10mm longer than before but 75mm shorter than its global siblings. In comparison, the Seltos sold in India is around 200mm shorter at 4,315mm.

Kia Sportage for Europe: design differences

While both versions of the new Sportage share a bold new front end that features the latest version of Kia’s ‘tiger grille’, the side bodywork of the European version has been reworked extensively to take account of its shorter overall length and wheelbase. The C-pillar in particular has been significantly revised and loses the window that’s present in the longer car. There is also a different rear bumper design with European models in GT-Line trim getting a contrasting black roof. The wing mirrors have been moved from the A-pillar to the doors, which is intended to boost visibility and refine aerodynamics, according to Kia. The alterations go beyond its length, with Kia’s European arm implementing bespoke regional tuning for the chassis, steering and ride comfort.

Kia Sportage for Europe: interior details

Inside, the new Sportage shares a dashboard with the Kia EV6 electric vehicle and is dominated by a gently curving display, that is comprised of two 12.3-inch digital screens. Many of the key controls are operated through a row of ‘multi-mode’ haptic buttons, which change functions depending on the task required.

The Sportage will be offered with a range of electrified petrol and diesel powertrains. A 1.6-litre mild-hybrid petrol engine will deliver 148hp and 178hp, and a diesel MHEV will be available with 113hp and 134hp. There will also be a 227hp, 1.6-litre hybrid option, and a 261hp plug-in hybrid that features a 13.8kWh battery for 35 miles of electric-only running.

Kia Sportage: will it come to India?

Kia India currently sells the Sonet and Seltos SUVs in our market and both are among best sellers in their respective segments. The Korean brand is expected to introduce a new MPV (Codename: KY) next year. There is no news of the Sportage making it to our shores anytime soon.
