Hyundai Mobis invests in Zendar imaging radar

South Korean components maker Hyundai Mobis Company announced it had invested US$4m in Zendar, a US based radar technology startup, allowing the two companies to increase collaboration developing autonomous driving technology.

Hyundai Mobis said its stake in the US company would provide a strong foundation for cooperative development of imaging radar for Level 4 autonomous driving, according to reports in South Korea.

Imaging radar improves the capabilities of existing radar systems by detecting the presence of bulky objects abd also recognising these objects by processing the data generated by the onboard radar. Together with cameras and light detection and ranging (LiDAR) systems, radar is a core technology used in autonomous vehicles.

Hyundai Mobis is the key supplier of advanced technology and systems for the Hyundai Motor Group (HMG), as well as supplying most chassis and drivetrain systems. It has invested heavily to ensure access to next generation technology, including in a number of startups worldwide.

Last year it announced a US$4bn joint venture with Aptiv to develop a self-driving platform and also invested US$50m in US-based Velodyne to bring to market LiDAR for Level 3 autonomous.
