Hyundai has revealed that its sub-compact SUV, the Exter, has received more than 50,000 bookings since May 8, when bookings were officially opened. The Exter was launched on July 10 with prices starting at Rs 6 lakh. Our dealer sources told us recently that the waiting period stood at 12 weeks, which is likely to have extended by now.
- 10,000 bookings for the Exter were received pre-launch
- Prices range from Rs 6.00 lakh to Rs 10.00 lakh
Hyundai Exter bookings
Hyundai says that before July 10, the Exter had gathered 10,000 bookings, and that number quickly crossed 50,000 within a month of the sub-compact SUV’s launch. Nearly 75 percent of the bookings are for the variants equipped with a sunroof, Hyundai said. The SX, SX(O) & SX(O) variants of the Exter are available with a single-pane sunroof, which is voice-activated.
The Korean brand also shared another breakup of the bookings, stating that 33 percent of the bookings are for the 5-speed AMT variants. This automated manual transmission in the Exter also gets paddle shifters, which, as we found out in our review, are quick to respond to inputs. The AMT on the Exter is available with only the petrol variants and is not offered on the CNG variants. Except for the EX variant, all other variants are available with the option of 5-speed AMT.

Hyundai Exter engine, gearbox, features and safety
The Exter is available with the 1.2-litre Kappa engine that has been powering other Hyundai models like the Nios, i20 and Venue. Under petrol power, this engine produces 83hp and 114Nm, however, CNG models get a marginal drop in power with 69hp and 95.2Nm. A choice of a 5-speed manual gearbox or a 5-speed AMT is available.
While the Hyundai Exter is a small car, the brand has ensured that it is feature-loaded in order to be competitive in the segment. Key features on the sub-compact SUV include a factory-fitted dashcam, automatic projector headlamps, keyless entry and go, an 8-inch touchscreen, automatic climate control, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, wireless charging, and in-built navigation.
The Exter gets safety features such as six airbags, ESC, hill assist control, ABS with EBD, rear parking sensors and camera and three-point seatbelts. The Exter has, however, not been crash tested.
Hyundai Exter price and rivals
The Exter’s prices range between Rs 6 lakh and Rs 10 lakh (ex-showroom). At this price point, it rivals the likes of the Tata Punch, Citroen C3 and Maruti Suzuki Ignis. Since the launch of the Hyundai Exter, Tata has already updated the Punch with a CNG powertrain option and the option of a sunroof to compete in the segment.
