Formula E says it is “seeking urgent clarification” from the new Congress-led Government of Telangana.
The Hyderabad E-Prix could be dropped from the 2024 Formula E calendar, with fresh concerns emerging after recent elections. This development comes just six weeks before the event is scheduled to take place on February 10.
- Hyderabad E-Prix was originally scheduled for February 10, 2024
- Discussions currently underway with Government of Telangana
The inaugural Hyderabad E-Prix was held on the streets alongside Hussain Sagar Lake earlier this year, with an attendance of roughly 31,000. While the drivers were impressed with the track itself, there were a number of operational and infrastructure issues.
There were some doubts surrounding the return of the event, especially since the organising team behind the race was disbanded back in August. However, the Hyderabad E-Prix was confirmed as part of the 2024 Formula E calendar in October. Since then, the city has seen a change in governance, with Congress taking command in Telangana.
Formula E’s senior executive team met with the new leadership of the Government of Telangana earlier this month and discussions have been ongoing. However, the championship has now released a statement saying it is concerned the race will have to be cancelled.
“Following a recent official communication received from the new Government of Telangana, Formula E is seeking urgent clarification of their contractual commitments under the agreement and how it could impact the Hyderabad race. Based on the content of the letter received, Formula E is concerned the race will not be able to go ahead as planned,” the statement read.
“With the event just a few weeks away and in its final stages of preparation, Formula E, partners and suppliers have already made significant commercial investments in the event.”
