Nothing compares to diesel for outright efficiency and TCO, but new regulation and the evolution of zero-emission tech will eventually change this. By Xavier Boucherat

There can be little doubt that diesel will continue to dominate in the truck engine segment for years to come. Figures from the European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (ACEA) show that over 2019, 97.9% of all new medium and heavy-duty trucks registered in the EU ran on the fossil fuel. The figure is very similar in the US, where 97% of on-highway Class 8 trucks are diesel-powered.
