Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder SUV recall due to seat belt issue

The midsize SUV is being recalled for a faulty front seat belt height adjuster; will affect Grand Vitara too.

Toyota has initiated a recall of the Urban Cruiser Hyryder to resolve a potential issue with the front seat belt shoulder height adjuster plate assembly.

  1. Approximately 994 vehicles fall under this recall
  2. No reported failure of the affected part till date

As a part of this recall, it is suspected that a defect in one of the child parts of the front seat belt shoulder height adjuster assembly could potentially lead to seat belt disassembly. As of date, there hasn’t been any report of the failure of the affected part.

The company is likely to get in touch with owners of affected vehicles, and if faulty, the part will be replaced by the company at their authorised service outlets.

Recall affects Maruti Grand Vitara too

Toyota manufactures the Urban Cruiser Hyryder at its plant in Bidadi in Karnataka. Incidentally, the manufacturer also produces the Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara at the same plant, which is identical under the skin, and shares its powertrain, components and ancillaries with the Toyota. As a result, this recall will affect certain models of the Grand Vitara as well.

The Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder is available with two engines – 1.5-litre four-cylinder petrol with mild-hybrid that’s mated to either a five-speed manual or six-speed automatic; and a 1.5-litre three-cylinder petrol-hybrid that’s mated to an e-CVT (planetary gearbox).

The mild-hybrid is priced between Rs 10.48 lakh-17.19 lakh, with the top spec model being the sole variant to get a manual transmission and all-wheel drive. The hybrid range is priced between Rs 15.11 lakh-18.99 lakh. Toyota is also gearing up to introduce CNG variants in the days to come.
