Latest Mirai is on a new platofrm with more hydrogen capacity |
Toyota’s US unit is launching the second generation 2021 Mirai next month. Meanwhile, Toyota Australia said it would deliver the hydrogen powered sedan to selected business and government fleets from the first quarter of 2021.
The US specification Mirai will offer multiple grades for the first time – XLE and Limited – and is based on Toyota’s premium rear wheel drive platform, The new platform allows for a highly rigid body that is lower, longer, and wider. The design is more aerodynamic.
Every grade comes standard with a 12.3-inch multimedia touchscreen with 14 JBL speakers including a subwoofer and amplifier, as well as Android Auto, Apple CarPlay and Amazon Alexa compatibility. An eight inch colour TFT LCD digital gauge cluster displays the speedometer, drive mode, fuel efficiency, MID and more. A Qi-compatible smartphone wireless charging tray also comes standard on every 2021 Mirai.
Australia’s initial allocation is 20 units.
First deliveries are expected to coincide with the commissioning of a solar-powered hydrogen production site and refuelling station supported by ARENA at Toyota’s Centre of Excellence in the Melbourne suburb of Altona.
The second-generation Mirai FCEV introduces performance and efficiency improvements to the fuel-cell system and expanded on-board hydrogen tank capacity that substantially increases driving range.
A new rear-wheel-drive layout and intelligent packaging of three hydrogen tanks (previously two) allows seating capacity to be increased to five (from four).
Toyota Australia sales and marketing head Sean Hanley said the introduction of the second generation model was the next step in achieving local acceptance of FCEVs, following trials of the first-generation model by a wide range of users (including councils and utilities companies) since 2016.
