Toyota GB’s entire allocation of the new GR86 coupe has sold out within 90 minutes of the car being offered for sale online.
An online-only ordering system was set up to handle demand for the hotly-anticipated model when order books open and the Japanese car brand’s assertion that “when it’s gone, it’s gone” became a reality in record time.
Priced from £29,995, the GR86 was offered with a 4.9% APR representative PCP agreement through Toyota Financial Services which delivered monthly repayments of £299 over a 42-month contract with a £4,777 customer deposit.
Customers who missed out on placing and an order on Wednesday have been given the opportunity to join a waiting list for any cancellations.
Toyota said that their place on the list is linked to the time at which they signed to join the list, so the “first come, first served” principle is maintained.
Mark Roden, Toyota GB’s operations director, said: “The phenomenal response to GR86 is a sign of how it is fulfilling its role as a thoroughbred sports car that’s affordable as well as thrilling to drive. Our Gazoo Racing-engineered models – GR Supra and GR Yaris – have generated an exceptional buzz with their competition-tuned performance and handling, helping raise expectations of what GR86 will deliver.”
Toyota’s recently announced that it will introduce a manual version of the GR Supra coupe to follow-up the success of its GR Yaris and the new GR86.
Customers who secured an order for the new GR86 will getting a sports car with a 2.4-litre ‘boxer’ petrol engine, producing 234PS and 250Nm – an upgrade on the 200PS offered by the GT86’s two-litre unit.
Toyota says the GR86 can accelerate from 0-62mph in 6.3 seconds, or 6.9 seconds when equipped with an automatic gearbox.
A single model grade is offered, with 18-inch alloy wheels, an eight-inch infotainment screen with smartphone connectivity, LED headlights, reversing camera, heated front seats and keyless entry fitted as standard.
An automatic gearbox can be specified for £2,090.
