Thousands of people duped in a scam centered around the Ola electric scooter

The scam involved the creation of a fake website and people impersonating Ola employees.

The Delhi police have held twenty people in connection with an elaborate online scam centred around the Ola Electric scooter. This scam has allegedly duped over one thousand people around the country. The twenty accused come from various parts of the country, including Patna, Bengaluru and Gurugram.

The scam was pulled off through the creation of a fake Ola Electric website that was targeted at people looking to buy the new Ola electric scooter. Through this site, unwitting folks would first pay Rs 499 to book the scooter and this was followed by calls from the accused pretending to be Ola employees. These calls lead to payments in the tens of thousands for things like down payments, delivery charges, insurance and more.

The scam came to light after a FIR was registered by the Delhi cyber police on the basis of a complaint that was received on 7th October 2022.

Until recently, Ola Electric scooters were sold solely via an online model and the company only recently decided to start opening physical experience centres.
