Suzuki builds two million cars in Gujarat plant in India

The last million cars have been produced in just 21 months. Baleno, Glanza, Dzire and Swift built here for India as well as export markets.

Suzuki’s Gujarat plant has completed cumulative automobile production of 2 million units, and the company notched this milestone on August 20, 2022. The plant was set up in March 2014 as the company’s first 100 percent Suzuki-investment automobile production company in India.

  • Plant A begun operations in 2017
  • Suzuki will also start production of BEVs in 2023
  • Baleno currently has backlog of 38,000 units

SMG started production in February 2017 and achieved accumulated production of two million units in five years and six months, the fastest by any Suzuki production plant. The two-millionth vehicle produced was the South African-spec Baleno (equipped with a 1.5-litre petrol). Located close to the Mundra Port, the Gujarat plant is also used as an export hub for markets, including Europe, Africa and Japan.

The millionth car from SMG – also a Baleno – had rolled out on October 21, 2020, just three years and nine months since starting production in February 2017. This means that the last million cars have been produced in just 21 months. Suzuki will also start production of Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs) in 2025, and vehicle batteries for BEVs in 2026, as reported by us earlier.

The SMG plant produces multiple models; Plant A rolls out the Baleno and Toyota Glanza, Plant B produces the Swift and the Dzire, while Plant C produces the Dzire and the Baleno. Of Maruti Suzuki India’s current pending orders of around 3,87,000 units, the premium Baleno hatchback currently has an order backlog of an estimated 38,000 units.

While Plant A begun operations in February 2017, Plant B kicked off in January 2019, followed by Plant C in April 2021, and production of export models began in March 2018.
