Renault Kwid EV, Dacia Spring global debut, February 21

Renault Kwid-based Dacia Spring EV is expected to be shown with major design and tech updates.

Renault’s sister brand, Dacia, will unveil a heavily updated Spring EV on February 21. The Dacia Spring EV is essentially an all-electric version of the Renault Kwid. The current-gen Spring EV and the Kwid EV are on sale in various markets across the globe. In India, Renault previewed the Kwid EV as the Renault K-ZEV concept at the Auto Expo at New Delhi in 2020, but there has been no market launch. The new Dacia Spring, like the current model, will also have Renault derivative sold as the Kwid EV, which will see a global debut a little later.

  2. Will be based on new Dacia Spring EV
  3. Expected to be new inside and out

New Dacia Spring EV will look like a mini-Duster

The all-new Duster made its global debut late last year with fresh, yet familiar design cues. Sources tell us that the new Spring EV will share quite a few of its design elements from the new Duster including the angular headlamps, the new grille design and some design bits at the back. Additionally, the teaser image also previews a higher ground clearance and larger wheel/tyre package, which will add to its SUV credentials.

The interior too will get updates and an all-new dashboard and steering wheel design is expected. There will be some interior bits like the switchgear, steering wheel and the infotainment screen, which will be shared with other Dacia-Renault products like the new Duster. There are talks of improvement in battery capacity and power output for the EV motor. However, there is no clarity on whether the platform from the current Spring EV will be carried over to the new one.

Dacia Spring EV: The India connection

Renault India MD Venkatram Mamillapalle had exclusively spoken to our sister publication Autocar Professional last year on an entry-level EV for India. However, as of now, the timeline for its India launch remains uncertain.
