Racer Kumar dies after crash in MRF National Car Racing Championship

The 59-year-old crashed while competing in the saloon race; incident under investigation.

Indian racer KE Kumar has passed away, succumbing to injuries sustained in a crash while competing in Round 2 of the 2022 MRF Indian National Car Racing Championship.

The 59-year-old was competing in the saloon race on Sunday morning at the Madras International Circuit when he crashed into a competitor’s car. Kumar’s car slid across the track and landed on the roof after slamming into a fence.

The race was red flagged and Kumar was transferred to a nearby hospital after a preliminary examination at the track’s medical centre. Unfortunately, he ended up succumbing to his injuries.

Remaining races for the day were cancelled in the wake of the tragic incident.

Incident being investigated

The FMSCI, the national governing body for motorsport, as well as organisers MMSC (Madras Motor Sports Club) have launched an investigation into the incident.

“It is a most unfortunate incident. Kumar was an experienced racer. I have known him for several decades as a friend and competitor. The MMSC and entire racing fraternity mourn his passing away and convey heartfelt condolences to his family,” said Vicky Chandhok, vice-president of the MMSC.
