New Porsche 911 GT3 RS: power, performance and aerodynamic details

The Porsche 911 GT3 RS features the largest-ever rear wing to be fitted on a production 911.

The new 911 GT3 RS has been launched globally, and Porsche India has priced the more track-biased version of the 911 at Rs 3.25 crore (ex-showroom, India). It gets more power and adds major updates to the car’s aerodynamics, including the largest rear wing to be fitted on a road-going 911. It also features a drag reduction system – a first for a production Porsche.

2022 Porsche 911 GT3 RS: engine and gearbox 

The 911 GT3 RS gets a 524hp, 4.0-litre flat-six engine that propels the car from 0-100kph in 3.2sec with a top speed of 296kph. The supercar is fitted with an improved 7-speed dual-clutch transmission that has one gear less, and shorter gear ratios compared to the standard 911. Additionally, Porsche is also giving it three drive modes – Normal, Sport and Track. 

To enhance its performance and aerodynamics, the 911 GT3 RS takes mechanical inspiration from the current 911 GT3R – the carmaker’s GT customer race car. 

2022 Porsche 911 GT3 RS: aerodynamics

Several changes on the new Porsche 911 GT3 RS enable it to produce more than twice the downforce of its predecessor and three times more than the existing 911 GT3. At 200kph, the 911 is capable of producing 409kg of downforce and 806kg at 284kph. It is the first road-going Porsche 911 to feature a radiator positioned centrally in its nose, which means it no longer gets a boot. 

First used in Porsche’s Le Mans-winning 911 RSR, the new radiator positioning has made room for integrated active aerodynamics on each side of the car in the form of “continuously adjustable wing elements”, says Porsche. 

It has the largest ‘swan neck’ rear wing ever fitted to a road-going Porsche 911 that measures around six feet wide and is taller than the car’s roof. Other changes include new side blades, wing inlets and rear splitter, which is a modified version of the one seen on the standard 911. 

The supercar is also equipped with a drag reduction system (DRS) for the first time, which flattens the GT3 RS’ wings to reduce drag, thereby improving straight-line speed and braking. The Porsche now gets larger front brakes, with pistons measuring 36mm in thickness and 32mm in diameter. Its kerb weight now stands at 1,450kg, 20kg more than the previous 911 GT3 RS. 

2022 Porsche 911 GT3 RS: optional packages

For track usage, Porsche is offering the Clubsport package at no additional cost which includes a fire extinguisher, six-point seatbelts and a steel rollover bar. The supercar also comes with an optional Weissach pack which adds carbon weave to the bonnet, exterior mirrors and rear wing. It also gets a rollbar, gearshift paddles with magnet technology and magnesium forged wheels.
