New Hyundai Verna expected price, exterior design, engines, launch and bookings

The new Verna borrows several styling cues from Hyundai’s existing models like Tucson, i20.

The next-gen Hyundai Verna has been leaked in full, thanks to new undisguised spy images of the car that have surfaced from South Korea. While Hyundai already previewed the next-gen Verna through a couple of design sketches, these new images give us a first, complete look at the production-spec car. Hyundai will officially take the wraps off the new Verna on March 21, and bookings are already underway for a token amount of Rs 25,000.

  3. Will be powered by two petrol engines, no diesel

New Hyundai Verna: exterior styling

The new Verna uses Hyundai’s Sensuous Sportiness design language with styling cues that can already be seen on a few Hyundai models sold in India, but it also gets its own unique touches. Up front, the new Verna gets a split LED headlamp setup with a new full-width LED light bar, but the grille, for instance, gets i20-like detailing and spans almost the entire width of bumper.

The edges of the bumper have an arrowhead-like design with vertically positioned extensions that also house the fog lamps. Atop the bonnet is a prominent Hyundai logo that now seems to have a two-dimensional design like on the new Grand i10 Nios facelift.

In profile, the doors get striking character lines that blend with the flared wheel arches at the rear, again, bearing close resemblance with the Tucson in India. Even the silver garnish around the window line has a similar treatment like the Tucson gets for its own C-pillar garnish. And while the design sketches previewed large wheels with flared wheel arches, the alloys on the production-spec model actually seem to fill up the wheel wells quite nicely.

At the rear, the Verna gets a completely unique tail lamp design with a full-width light bar, vertical extensions, and crystal-like detailing. The reverse lamps can be seen housed in separate units at each end and are split into three horizontal lines. The rear bumper, with its diamond-like patterns and faux skid plate is, again, similar to the Tucson.

Do note that the car seen here sports the name ‘Accent’ on the tail gate as it is called in several left-hand drive markets like South Korea and the Middle East. The India-spec car will, instead, bear the ‘Verna’ lettering on the tail gate as was confirmed in the first set of teaser images.

New Hyundai Verna: engine and trim details

The big addition to the next-gen Verna’s engine line-up will be a new 1.5-litre direct injection turbo-petrol, which will produce 160hp and will be mated to a 6-speed manual or a 7-speed DCT automatic gearbox. The other engine will be the 115hp, 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol unit carried over from the outgoing Verna. This will be paired to either a 6-speed manual or a CVT gearbox. Both the engines will be RDE and E20 (20 percent ethanol blend) compliant.

However, there will be no diesel engine available with the next-gen Verna and, with this, the midsize sedan segment will go on to be petrol-only as the Verna’s rivals do not offer a diesel engine either.

The new Verna will be sold in EX, S, SX and SX (O) trims. We expect the 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine to be offered on the higher trims, while the 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine will be the mainstay of the line-up.

New Hyundai Verna: expected price and rivals.

Expect the new Verna to be priced around Rs 60,000 – Rs 1 lakh more than the outgoing sedan. The new Verna will rival the Volkswagen VirtusSkoda Slavia, the upcoming Honda City facelift as well as the Maruti Suzuki Ciaz, which recently had a slight refresh.
