New BMW 5 Series LWB will go on sale on July 24 in India

New 5 Series will get a long wheelbase body style in India for the first time.

BMW will launch the new 5 Series in India on July 24. Aimed squarely at the E-Class LWB, the new BMW 5 Series will be sold here in long wheelbase avatar for the first time. Just like the E-Class LWB, India will be the second market after China to get the 5 Series LWB.

BMW 5 Series design and dimensions

The latest-gen BMW 5 Series LWB measures 5,175mm in length, 1,900mm in width and 1,520mm in height, and has a wheelbase of 3,105mm. This makes it 145mm longer overall than the regular 5 Series sedan, with 110mm of that extra length going to the wheelbase. While these dimensions are for the model sold in China, we expect some country-specific changes like an RHD setup and slightly higher ground clearance.

The new 5 Series LWB looks identical to the standard car but the extended length is clearly visible, just like the 3 Series Grand Limousine sold in India. Unlike the E-Class LWB, which gets a separate quarter glass and a unique door design, the 5 Series LWB’s rear door looks just like the standard car as it doesn’t get a rear quarter glass.

Just like the standard car, the 5 Series LWB gets similar headlamp and tail-lamp design, and the illuminated grille. However, it gets mild tweaks to its front and rear bumpers on some variants. The 5 Series LWB in China gets an illuminated ‘5’ on the C-pillar, which gives the car a unique look, although this doesn’t light up on the standard 5 Series.

BMW 5 Series LWB feature highlights

The 5 Series LWB sold in China gets a long list of creature comforts like 4-zone climate control, quilted upholstery and a dual-tone design. It also gets the 31.1-inch display that folds down from the headliner. The screen has an 8K resolution, is 5G compatible, and, along with the Bowers & Wilkins surround sound system, it allows for an immersive experience on the go. We expect most of these to trickle down to the India-spec car as well.

The new 5 Series will be the second LWB sedan for BMW in India, with the first being the popular 3 Series Grand Limousine that went on sale a few years ago. The new 5 Series LWB will compete with the all-new E-Class LWB, which is also expected to go on sale later this year.
