Tesla model X will be the key rival for the upcoming Mercedes EQE SUV
Mercedes-Benz is set to unveil the all-new EQE electric SUV next year. The EQE SUV will sit next to the EQE electric sedan in the brand’s EQ-badged electric vehicle line-up.
- EQE will be positioned to take on Tesla Model X
- Based on the EVA2 platform
- Will have multiple output and range options
The EQE SUV will have the fresh styling cues seen on the newer Mercedes-Benz models, especially the EQ range that now includes multiple models starting from the EQA, the EQC, the EQE and the EQS sedan that sits right at the top of the range.
The EQE SUV has been in development at Mercedes-Benz under the internal codename X294. Unlike the current EQC SUV which is also sold in India, the new model will be based on the bespoke electric MEA (or EVA2) platform, and is being lined up to rival the Tesla Model X and BMW iX3.
The recent confirmation of the EQE in sedan and SUV form and the forthcoming EQS SUV will expand Mercedes-Benz’s line-up of EQ models to eight. The firm has already launched the EQA, EQB and EQC SUVs, the EQS luxury sedan and the EQV van. Mercedes has pledged to launch 10 fully electric vehicles by 2025, one of which will be the recently confirmed electric EQG off-roader.
Power and torque are expected to eclipse the 407hp of the EQC. Crucially, the driving range should increase significantly, too. The target for the EQE saloon is 600km, although the SUV’s reduced aerodynamic efficiency may reduce this. The EQC’s range is currently quoted at around 416km, depending on specification.
