Hyundai will officially start accepting bookings for the Ioniq 5 from December 20.
Hyundai will officially open bookings for the Ioniq 5 in India on December 20, 2022, the company has announced. With its launch slated at Auto Expo in January 2023, the Ioniq 5 will be Hyundai’s flagship model in India.
The Hyundai Ioniq 5 is a sister model to the Kia EV6 that is already on sale in the country. However, while the Kia EV6 comes as a full import, Hyundai will locally assemble the Ioniq 5.

Hyundai Ioniq 5 to be priced lower than the Kia EV6
The Ioniq 5 will be priced more competitively than the Kia EV6 (Rs 59.96 lakh) that comes here as a CBU. The price variation will be due to the difference in customs duty between CBU and CKD (Completely Knocked Down) cars in India.
Although Hyundai has not confirmed which battery pack or powertrain configuration it will offer in India, the Ioniq 5 will undercut the Kia EV6 – which comes with a larger 77.4kWh battery – by some margin. A source in Hyundai had told us that the carmaker is targeting a sub-Rs 50 lakh price for its flagship EV.
In addition to the Kia EV6, it will take on the Volvo XC40 Recharge and will also compete with similarly priced EVs like the Mini Cooper SE.
Hyundai Ioniq 5’s design inspired by 45 EV concept
One of the talking points about the Ioniq 5 is its distinct design which closely resembles the 45 EV concept shown at the 2019 Frankfurt Auto Show. The retro look is characterised by sharp lines, flat surfaces and an SUV-ish stance but with highly raked windscreens. It also gets a pixelated design for the front and rear lights and an intricate design for the 20-inch aero-optimised alloys, making the Ioniq 5 quite different from other Hyundai models.
Hyundai Ioniq 5 gets minimalist interior
The interior of the Ioniq 5 follows a minimalist approach and is characterised by a flat floor, flexible seats and a movable centre console, which can slide back and forth by up to 140mm. The cabin is quite spacious and Hyundai has used sustainable materials like fabrics made from recycled plastic bottles and eco-friendly leather for the seats and door upholstery, headliner and carpet. It also used bio-paint for the crash pads, switches, steering wheel and door pads.
In terms of equipment, the Ioniq 5 gets a pair of 12-inch screens for the instrument cluster and the infotainment system, head-up display with augmented reality functions, ADAS and even digital screens for rear-view mirror display. But it remains to be seen how much of it makes it to the India-spec model.
Hyundai Ioniq 5 battery and powertrain details
Internationally, Hyundai offers the Ioniq 5 with two battery pack options – 58kWh and 72.6kWh – both of which are available in AWD and rear-wheel drive configurations. The smaller battery produces 170hp in rear-wheel drive guise and 233hp in AWD guise; the larger battery makes 217hp in rear-wheel drive guise and 305hp in AWD guise.
The smaller battery pack is good for 383km in the official test cycle, whilst the larger battery stretches range to a claimed 481km (WLTP cycle). The Ioniq 5 supports superfast 800V charging which, technically, can charge the battery from 10 to 80 percent in 18 minutes. It remains to be seen which powertrain configuration makes it to India.
