With the Hyundai Alcazar, the carmaker is looking to bite into the three-row mid-size SUV pie currently housing models such as the MG Hector Plus and Mahindra XUV500. In a recent interview with Autocar India, Tarun Garg, Director – Sales, Marketing & Service revealed that the company acknowledged that the Alcazar could eat into sales of the Creta and vice-versa though it was optimistic that overall sales volumes would grow.

Hyundai Alcazar to help push overall volumes
Answering a question on sales cannibalisation, Garg replied, “Yes, you’re right, and frankly we don’t mind it. I already mentioned how the Alcazar is different and how probably the customer segment will be very different, but as long as the total volumes increase, we are not complaining at all.”
Garg also mentioned that the Alcazar would target buyers who would want a “little bit of more versatility” and also offer existing Creta customers with the option of an upgrade. He also revealed that the brand was optimistic of the upcoming SUV’s performance given the strong response to the new Creta.
“The Creta has been able to set some really good benchmarks in the last one year. You can see that we have a huge backlog of orders and the Alcazar, we feel, will bring in that kind of an upgrade option to the customers and bring in some very new customers to the Hyundai family,” he said.
“We are really looking at it with a lot of optimism, this will be a game changer for us,” he added.
Hyundai Alcazar: What we know so far?
While sharing its platform with the Creta, the Alcazar is longer than the former – in length and wheelbase – and features a heavily revised rear end to accommodate a third row of seats. The Alcazar will be available in either a six- or seven-seat configuration with the former getting a unique floor mounted centre console between the middle row captain seats.
Buyers will have a choice of two engine options to choose from – a 159hp 2.0-litre petrol and a 115hp 1.5-litre diesel engine. Both engines will be available with either a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic gearbox.
