Five largest construction projects initiated in Europe in automotive in Q3 2021

Here are Europe’s five largest automotive construction projects that were initiated in Q3 2021, according to GlobalData’s construction projects database.

1. Blyth Battery Cell Manufacturing Plant – $3,579m

The project involves the construction of a 232,258m2 battery cell plant with a manufacturing capacity of 30 GWh annually on 95ha of land in Blyth, Northumberland, the UK.

Construction work started in Q3 2021 and is expected to be completed in Q4 2027.

The project aims to enable the scalable production of a diverse product portfolio of lithium-ion batteries to support the UK’s Road to Zero targets and unprecedented transition to electrification. It is planned to open with an annual output of 10GWh in each stage – enough for 130,000 EVs and the capacity to produce over 300,000 batteries per year by 2027, eventually creating up to 3,000 jobs.

2. Kieler Förde Shipbuilding Facility Development – $295m

The project involves the construction of the shipbuilding facilities with a gross floor area of 15,390m2 in Kieler Förde, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany.

Construction work commenced in Q3 2021 and is expected to finish in Q2 2023.

The project aims to increase its production capacities in submarine construction from mid 2023.

3. Alexandra Dock Offshore Wind Turbine Blade Manufacturing Factory Expansion – $258m

The project involves the expansion of an offshore wind turbine blade manufacturing factory in Hull, East Riding of Yorkshire, the UK.

Construction work started in Q3 2021 and is forecast to complete in Q2 2023.

The project aims to double the size of the facilities and increase the production facilities of wind turbine blades.

4. Hull Offshore Wind Blade Factory Expansion – $258m

The project involves the expansion of a wind blade factory from 36,000m2 to 77,600m2 in Hull, England, the UK.

Construction work commenced in Q3 2021 and is expected to be completed in Q2 2023.

The project aims to increase the floor area, enabling the manufacture of next-generation blades, increasing the number of direct jobs by 200 from around 1000 jobs.

5. Hombourg Glass Manufacturing Plant Expansion – $121m

The project involves the expansion of its glass manufacturing plant in Hombourg, Haut-Rhin department, Grand Est region, France.

Construction work started in Q3 2021 and is expected to be completed in Q2 2023.
