The BMW CE 04 has been spotted testing in production form for the first time. While EV technology probably isn’t advanced enough for BMW to electrify its big tourers and adventure bikes just yet, it isn’t stopping the Bavarian manufacturer from putting an electric scooter into production.

The CE 04 Concept was unveiled late last year, and while some concepts are created purely to wow audiences at motor shows, the big CE was always slated to go into production. It’s now moved on from the concept stage and hit the streets in production guise.
BMW CE 04: design and features
Most of the concept’s elements still seem to be in place on the test mule, including the intricate, layered, origami-style bodywork. To check the legal boxes, BMW had added a rear mudguard-mounted indicators and a number plate. Also still present on the test mule is a fairly large TFT screen, though it doesn’t seem to be quite as big as the 10.25-inch unit seen on the concept. But that was probably overkill anyway. The display should still feature Bluetooth connectivity and navigation, as well as phone and music controls.
A closer look reveals another neat little feature – keyless operation. And while there’s no mention of a mobile phone charging port, BMW is also simultaneously developing a jacket to go with this scooter, which does feature wireless charging. It’s not clear whether the rider in this picture is wearing the jacket in question. But what is visible is a distinct lack of real estate for the passenger, with only a tiny pillion seat on offer. Considering the instant torque kick that electrics offer, it would also be wise for BMW to add some sort of backrest for the pillion.
BMW CE 04: underpinnings
Like the concept, this test mule features unusual solid wheels, a mid-mounted motor and a belt-drive system to send power to the rear wheel. Suspension is handled by a telescopic fork and offset monoshock. Thanks to the battery packs being tucked under the floorboard, there’s enough underseat storage space for a full-face helmet.
BMW CE 04: India launch
Considering the rapid pace at which BMW seems to be developing this scooter, it’s quite likely that the CE 04 could hit showroom floors globally in the next 12 months. However, as there has been no word from the company about its India launch as yet, it’s not expected to come to our market anytime soon.
