With more than 50 million visits to Indeed every month in the UK alone1 we have a front-row seat to the global economy. Looking at the UK’s automotive industry we see that job postings have surged since the start of the pandemic. In an ideal world there is a good balance between the demand for workers – which we see through the number of jobs posted to the platform – and the number of jobseekers applying for those jobs.
In some cases, such as with demand for roles in automotive Sales, job postings on Indeed have risen by 47% since the start of the pandemic, while the number of jobseekers looking for those jobs has increased by 60%. This is a fairly healthy balance. On the other hand, roles in installation and maintenance have increased by 269% while the number of jobseekers in that category has increased by only 185% over the same period. In other words, the demand for workers is significantly greater than the supply.2
Because the volume of roles and jobseekers on Indeed is so high, we are also able to break this data down at a regional level. This helps us to see areas where it might be easier or more difficult to recruit. This information can be used to help to develop different strategies. For example, it might be worth considering whether some administrative roles can be done remotely and therefore offered to people in parts of the country where the supply of labour for these roles is high.
The essential elements of a successful recruitment strategy are to write job advertisements in a compelling way and to ensure that your offer to potential employees – known as your ‘employer brand’ – helps you to stand out from your competition. With our ability to see what millions of jobseekers search for every month, we can advise you on the best ways to do this.
We have seen from our own research that 73% of jobseekers in the United Kingdom say a job description that includes duties, skills, and requirements is the most valuable information for gaining a better understanding of a role.3
With significant recent advances in the use of Artificial Intelligence – and more exciting developments to come in 2024 – we can reduce the amount of time it takes to create a new job description from 2 hours to just 5 minutes.4
