BMW R20 concept unveil, details

At the heart of the R20 concept lies an air-cooled 1,802cc Boxer engine taken from the R18. However, BMW has bumped up the capacity to 2,000cc for the R20 concept. BMW hasn’t revealed any figures for this motor but we expect the number to be higher than what we see with the R18. For reference, the R18 produced 91hp at 4,750 rpm and 157Nm at 3,000 rpm.

In terms of design, the R20 concept features a new aluminium tank finished in a colour BMW calls “hotter than pink”. Additionally, the R20 concept features colour-coordinated parts such as the cylinder head covers, air intake funnels and belt cover that is finished in polished anodized aluminium.

While the paralever strut, brake callipers and footrest are finished in gunmetal. It also features a 3D-printed aluminium ring that integrates the DRL and BMW has given it a floating effect. The seat features quilted black alcantara and leather along with a compact rear which integrates the LED taillight into the seat.

BMW claims to have completely redeveloped the chassis and the R20 features a double-loop main frame that’s made of chrome-molybdenum steel tubes. It also features a rear wheel with a black disc like design that’s 17-inches and wrapped in a 200/55 size rear tyre. Meanwhile the front is equipped with a 17-inch spoke wheel wrapped with a 120/70 size tyre.

“The R20 concept is a bold interpretation of the BMW Motorrad DNA. It combines modern technical elements with a classic roadster design. Its oversized proportions and minimalistic aesthetic make it an unmistakable character”, says Alexander Buckan, Head of Design BMW Motorrad.

Key design features include an exposed driveshaft, ISR brake callipers, twin exhaust, a fully adjustable Öhlins suspension setup, and a swingarm made of chrome-molybdenum steel. This gives the R20 a wheelbase of 1,550mm.

Currently there is no more information regarding any performance figures or if the R20 concept will see production.
