Volvo XC40 recharge now called EX40, C40 now called EC40, new naming strategy

Apart from new names, the EX40 and EC40 get performance software package that adds more power.

Volvo recently announced a new naming strategy for its XC40 and C40 crossovers, by naming them the EX40 and EC40, respectively. The company is dropping the Recharge suffix to bring it in line with its current and future EV line-up, which includes the EX30 and the EX90. The nomenclature for the petrol XC40 remains unchanged, but the plug-in hybrid versions are now known as the T6 and T8.

Apart from receiving new names, the EX40 and EC40 are now available with a new Performance software package that bumps the power output of the range-topping dual-motor powertrain to 436hp – making them more powerful than the Mercedes-AMG A45 S hatchback. Volvo promised “faster acceleration” for the models, but didn’t say how much it had trimmed off their 0-100kph time, which previously stood at 4.7sec.

In certain markets, existing owners can activate the Performance upgrade using the Volvo app. It isn’t yet clear what impact the power bump has on the range of the two cars, but Volvo said the single-motor EX40 and EC40 will have a maximum range of 577km and 583km, respectively.

Both models are expected to go on sale in a staggered manner starting this May, which means the India launch can be expected sometime during the second half of this year.
