Zero’s strength will be its electric powertrain tech, while Hero will bring manufacturing and scale to the table.
Back in September last year, we reported that Hero MotoCorp and California-based Zero Motorcycles were finalising an agreement to partner on electric motorcycles. At the time, the big news was about Hero making an equity investment to the tune of USD 60 million (approx. Rs 490 crore) in Zero Motorcycles. Now, the two companies have put pen to paper and signed an agreement to co-develop upcoming electric motorcycles.
The collaboration combines the expertise of Zero in developing powertrains and electric motorcycles with the scale of manufacturing, sourcing and marketing of Hero MotoCorp. The American EV maker’s range comprises five street bikes – SR/S, SR/F, SR, S and FXE – and four dual-sport machines – DSR/X, DSR, DS and FX. In September 2022, Zero Motorcycles unveiled the newest models for its Model Year 2023 line-up, headlined by the all-new DSR/X adventure bike, priced at $24,495 (approx. Rs 20 lakh)
Dr. Pawan Munjal, Chairman & CEO, Hero MotoCorp, said, “Our partnership with Zero Motorcycles is a significant milestone in our journey towards ushering in an era of sustainable clean technology in the mobility space. With Zero as our partner, we look forward to accelerating the transition of electric mobility in India and across our global markets.”
Sam Paschel, CEO, Zero Motorcycles, commented: “We are delighted to have Hero MotoCorp – the world’s largest motorcycle maker – as our partner. Our companies are both committed to transforming the riding experience and bringing remarkable, innovative products to the world. With these shared passions, we look forward to delivering exceptional value, performance and fun for our customers.”
