De Tomaso P900 hypercar unveiled; powertrain, performance, design

The P900’s 6.2-litre V12 can rev up to 12,300rpm and weighs only 220kg.

De Tomaso has unveiled its latest track-only, limited-run hypercar, the P900. It is powered by a unique 6.2-litre V12 that revs up to 12,300rpm and will be limited to just 18 units. The P900 derives its name from its 900kg weight and 900hp power output.

De Tomaso P900: powertrain

The V12 engine in the P900 weighs 220kg, which De Tomaso calls the lightest and shortest V12 ever. The P900’s V12 engine does not feature any electrification technology but is entirely new and can be run solely on synthetic fuel. De Tomaso said it is “in essence, the world’s first carbon-neutral V12”. Power goes to the rear wheels via a custom Xtrac gearbox.

De Tomaso says the engineering and development of the new V12 engine will continue into 2024, however, the car will be showcased early next year at an unnamed automotive event. Customers who wish to acquire the P900 early will get the car with a reworked Judd V10, from a Formula 1 race car from the 1990s. 

The company said that not all 18 units of the P900 have been sold and it will disclose performance figures to the owners only for the time being. Owners can also be tutored by De Tomaso in racing and the firm will supply a full team of mechanics and engineers to set the car up on a track day. 

De Tomaso P900: design

Much of the radical-looking car, which was created to pay homage to the Carroll Shelby-designed P70 and “tackle lap times”, has been designed in-house and adapted from the De Tomaso P72, including the 6.2-litre powertrain. 

Several of the P900’s other technologies are derived from motorsport, including an active drag reduction system (DRS) incorporated into the rear wing. 

Other aspects, including much of the P900’s carbon fibre engineering, were designed by Capricorn, which helped to deliver the Porsche 919 Evo Le Mans racer, and is vastly experienced in the world of Formula 1.
