Jeep Grand Cherokee: What’s new for India?
Jeep had commenced road-testing the Grand Cherokee SUV earlier this year. The new Grand Cherokee, unlike its predecessor will be assembled in India, thus making it Jeep’s fourth SUV to be locally assembled on our turf that also includes the Wrangler, Compass and the Meridian. The latest-gen Grand Cherokee SUV is sold in two sizes overseas, however, sources tell us that India will get the standard five-seat version and not the longer three-row Jeep Grand Cherokee L SUV. Jeep has also confirmed that India will be the first market outside North America to have the SUV locally assembled.
Jeep Grand Cherokee: Styling and features
The latest Jeep Grand Cherokee looks fresh with styling cues borrowed from the newer Jeep models like the Wagoneer and even the Meridian. It gets multiple displays on the dashboard, including a large 10.1-inch central touchscreen, a digital instrument screen, and another dedicated touchscreen in front of the co-driver. Jeep has earlier confirmed that the India-spec SUV will receive this third dashboard-mounted display. Additionally, the Grand Cherokee will also come with a panoramic sunroof, leather upholstery, ventilated front seats, a head-up display, and a powered tailgate, among others.
Jeep Grand Cherokee: Powertrain and tech
For the new Grand Cherokee, Jeep has ditched the diesel engine option. The upcoming SUV will get only a 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine paired with an 8-speed automatic gearbox as standard. As far as safety tech goes, the Grand Cherokee will come with ADAS in India, as officially confirmed by the brand. The new Grand Cherokee come with four-wheel drive with selectable terrain modes – Auto, Sport, Mud/Sand, and Snow.
Jeep Grand Cherokee: Rivals in India
The Grand Cherokee will go up against luxury SUVs such as the Mercedes GLE, BMW X5 and the Land Rover Discovery in India. Expect deliveries to begin by end-2022 at some cities.
