Ford recalls electric Mustang due to detaching glass

Ford is recalling 17,692 2021 Mustang Mach-E vehicles.

NHTSA said the windscreen may not have been properly bonded to the vehicle, which could allow it to detach. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 212, “Windshield Mounting.”

Dealers will remove and reinstall the windscreen, free of charge.

Separately, the automaker is calling back 13,544 units because the panoramic roof glass panel may not have been properly bonded to the vehicle  which could allow it to detach. Dealers will apply additional urethane adhesive, free of charge.

According to thedetroitbureau.com, the recalled vehicles were assembled between 24 February, 2020 and 18 July, 2021.

The Mustang Mach-E SUVs will be recalled in both the US and Europe. All affected vehicles were produced at Cuautitlan Izcalli, Mexico.

Ford reportedly said owners could become aware of the problem if they experience leaks around the windshield or the roof.

But NHTSA is concerned the windscreen or glass roof could blow off though, according to Ford, there have been no reports of accidents or injuries related to the problem.

NHTSA warned that if either the windscreen or roof glass were to detach while driving motorists could be injured. Loose glass also could strike pedestrians or other vehicles.

Thedetroitbureau.com noted Ford has now had to order three separate recalls of the Mach-E while it has faced additional problems including a software glitch that led to ‘bricking’  by some early models. Some vehicles had their 12-volt batteries drain while charging the SUV’s high-voltage lithium-ion pack. As a result, they would enter a ‘deep sleep’ mode.

Ironically, thedetroitbureau.com observed, after a case where a Model Y’s roof blew off on the highway, Ford’s battery development director Darren Palmer took a shot at Tesla, declaring that the Mach-E’s “doors fit properly, the plastics and other materials colour match, the bumpers don’t fall off, the roof doesn’t come off when you wash it, the door handles don’t get stuck in cold weather”.

The report added Ford had faced a series of launch problems over the years, something that has set back the debut of critical products such as the latest Explorer and the newly revived Bronco. That off-road SUV’s production was temporarily put on hold early this year due to problems with the optional, removable roof. Production recently was restarted.
