2021 Maserati Ghibli: Engine and gearbox options

As mentioned previously Maserati is offering a choice of three engine options – a familiar 3.0-litre V6 putting out 340hp and the new entry-level 2.0-litre four-cylinder mild-hybrid and 3.8-litre V8 from the Trofeo.

Starting with the new 2.0-litre, the four-cylinder mill is Maserati’s first hybrid powertrain and features a 48V mild-hybrid set-up that provides an additional electronic boost when required. The unit puts out 330hp and 450Nm with Maserati claiming a 0-100kph time of 5.7 seconds. The mild hybrid system regenerates charge for the battery during braking with the battery located under the boot floor.

Moving to the V8, the Ferrari-derived 3.8-litre twin-turbo V8 pumps out a notable 580hp and 730Nm of torque which Maserati says propels the Ghibli Trofeo from 0-100kph in just 4.3 seconds and up to a top speed of 326kph. The petrol V6 is the familiar 3.0-litre unit from the old Ghibli S and puts out 430hp and 580Nm. All models send power to the rear wheels via an 8-speed automatic gearbox.

While the Ghibli was previously available with a diesel engine option, the updated luxury sedan only gets petrol engine options.

Maserati Ghibli rivals

The standard Ghibli has no direct rivals in India but given the engine specifications, the BMW 740Li and Audi A8 55TFSI are potential rivals for the petrol V6 models. The less powerful Ghibli Hybrid has no real alternative with the closest in terms of engine and price being the two-door 2.0-litre four-cylinder Jaguar F-Type Coupe. The Ghibli Trofeo on the other hand will see competition from the likes of the Audi RS7 with the Mercedes-AMG E 63 and BMW M5 currently no longer on sale.

Maserati: Future models for India

Maserati is also expected to launch the Trofeo version of the Quattroporte and Levante in India as well with the mid-engine MC20 supercar also on the cards.
